That's a little strange that HP has not released full fledged drivers for Windows 7 for HP Photosmart 7660.ġ. On the other hand, I would find extremely stupid to use a photographic printer as if it was a quadrichromic 600 dpi
I'd really like to have the advice of Microsoft people here, before I might corrupt something in trying to install something "inappropriate".
HP site had, for a short period of time, an executable package with a dedicated driver and some printing software for the Photosmart 7660/7760, but now that I would need it it seems to have disappeared (retired? was it buggy?) somewhere else in the Internet, I found that several users had very good luck with Win-7 by installing the Photosmart 7760 driver instead under Vista, I found out that the use of Photosmart 7800 family is far better, the only feature which doesn't work being the chromatic correction (it hangs the printer, not the spooler) But it enables only printing at the very basic resolution. I know this driver: it's the same HP recommends under Vista. HP site says that under Win-7 圆4, an alternate driver should be used, the one for HP Deskjet 560 if I remember well. I've got a HP Photosmart 7660 printer and I have very confused ideas about the drivers I'll have to use under Win-7. In the hypothesis everything begins to work properly, I still have a residual doubt: Hope this helps others with a similar type problem. It's very likely that Win-7 will be soon installed in place of Vista on my computer which has had, until now, mountains of problems. The alternate printer driver does not provide 100% of the services provideīy the original photosmart 7660 printer driver, but it does satisfy the needs of the majority of users. The 7660 sprang to life at this point! As a follow on check I was able to successfully print from the internet downloads, from Email, and from all the MS Office applications. At the end of the process I was given the option of printingĪ Test Page. Selection window I chose the alternate HP deskjet 5600 driver. I then typed the name of the actual printer (hp photosmart 7600) even though the OS was using the alternate deskjet 5600 printer driver. I was then presented with a sequence of "Add Hardware" procedures. From the printer driver These are the names confirmed for the host computer to which the 7660 printer is connected. Printer>Click on "Create a new port">Local Port>Click Next. I then went to the Windows 7 64bit laptop and did the following sequence: Start>Control Panel>Printers>Add printer> Add local Printer name via Start>Control Panel>Printers and Faxes>Right click on the photosmart 7660>Properties>Sharing Tab. To the desktop and reconfirmed the host Computer Name via Start>My Computer>Properties>Computer Name tab. As learned from my Forum answers, I first went I first learned from HP that a 64bit printer driver for the 7660 was unavailable but that the driver for the HP deskjet 5600 was a compatible alternative and was also available on my new Windows 7 64bit OS. I now have access from my new laptop running Windows 7 64bit via our wireless local area network to my HP photosmart 7660 printer connected via cable to the host Dell desktop running Windows XP SP3 32bit. I need the procedure for installing this Deskjet 5600 printer-driver for my network printer. HP also gave me a step-by-step procedure for installing this driver but it only covers the installation of a local USB printer and not a network
Then attempted to download that driver I was given a msg stating that this driver was already on my Windows 7 system.
When I could not locate the printer-file on the Windows 7 system, I went on-line to the HP website and found that they did not have a Windows 7 64-bit driver for the PhotoSmart 7660 but that the Deskjet 5600 driver was a compatible alternate. Laptop to the Photosmart 7660 via the wireless network using the "Add Devices and Printers" option, the system could not locate an appropriate printer-driver on Windows Update, and then gave the error msg, "the file INF is needed.
The desktop and several laptops all running Windows XP have successfully connected to the network printer for several years.
The DSL modem is wired to router and router to desktop. I have a small wireless home network setup with the following components: Desktop running on Windows XP, DSL modem, Belkin router, and HP Photosmartħ660 printer wired to desktop via USB. Similar to the Q by Beatr79, I have also just purchased a new Dell Inspiron 17R laptop running Windows 7 64-bit.
